Making a roadmap public is a big move, and you want to make sure your whole team is on board.<\/p>\n<p>To help you do that, we\u2019ve created a survey that you can use with your team. You raised it to behave well. You put a lot of time and effort into it every day. It\u2019s a part of you. You\u2019re proud. Nobody talks smack about your baby.<\/p>\n<p>Some product owners become so attached to their \u201cbaby\u201d that they <a href=\"https:\/\/canny.io\/blog\/encouraging-dissent-negative-feedback\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">refuse to listen to anything even mildly critical or constructive<\/a>. It doesn\u2019t matter if it\u2019s a customer, an investor, or another teammate.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s their baby, and they know better.<\/p>\n<p>However, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbinsights.com\/research\/startup-failure-reasons-top\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">42 percent of startups fail because of no market need<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>This means that everyone should be very inclined to <a href=\"https:\/\/canny.io\/blog\/roadmap-prioritization-guide\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">base their roadmap on users<\/a>, not their own preferences, beliefs, or attachments.<\/p>\n<p>If customers aren\u2019t involved, you\u2019re not building a product for them. They\u2019re not built to be looked at by a \u201cnormal\u201d person. They\u2019re there mostly for the product team to keep track of their work.<\/p>\n<p>However, that\u2019s what external-facing teams have to do\u2014communicate it to \u201cnormal\u201d people.<\/p>\n<p>Who\u2019s going to be helping them \u201ctranslate\u201d it, providing extra information, and help out? The product team.<\/p>\n<p>Can anyone from any team just drop whatever they\u2019re doing to deal with someone else\u2019s \u201curgent\u201d issue? No.<\/p>\n<p>Are people going to be waiting for information for ages? Yes. Who\u2019s going to be pissed? Publicly, to instantly share it with customers, potential customers, and other stakeholders<\/p>\n<p>Product folks don\u2019t have to stop what they\u2019re doing every 5 seconds to specify, translate, and communicate.<\/p>\n<p>Other teams don\u2019t have to blow a fuse while waiting for the product team to get back to them while a customer is waiting.<\/p>\n<p>Less wasted time = less wasted money.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2>Selfish public roadmap benefit #3: More new customers with less effort<\/h2>\n<p>Public roadmaps aren\u2019t good just for existing customers. They can also be super effective at reeling in new ones.<\/p>\n<p>There are two main ways a public roadmap can help bring in potential customers:<\/p>\n<h3>1. Most options are still missing this or that\u2014little things maybe, but still things.<\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s say there are two options on the table, both with slight faults. Most customers don\u2019t necessarily reach out to ask you if you\u2019re ever going to work on them. They\u2019ll just go for the prettier\/cheaper one.<\/p>\n<p>If your roadmap is public and accessible to them with no effort, they can see what\u2019s coming up.<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re planning on fixing the \u201cfaults\u201d they found with your product, they\u2019ll choose you.<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re not, well, then maybe you wouldn\u2019t be the best fit for their use case anyway. They\u2019ll save themselves money, and you\u2019re saving yourself a churned customer.<\/p>\n<h3>2. Potential users will <em>ask<\/em> to see your public roadmap<\/h3>\n<p>Some people do ask about your plans with the product.<\/p>\n<p>We\u2019ve all heard \u201cI\u2019m only going to pay if you build this thing in the near future.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>With a public roadmap, you can either show them:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Yes, we will be building this thing, and all these other cool things!<\/li>\n<li>No, but look at all these other cool things. Maybe those will give you an alternative solution for what you need?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div class=\"callout\">\n<p><strong>How your business will benefit from making your roadmap public<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>You\u2019ll be able to show the value you\u2019ll be adding to both potential customers you do interact with as well as the ones you don\u2019t.<\/p>\n<p>There will be less hesitation when researching on the customers\u2019 side. Deals can be closed much faster. Communication between customer-facing teams and customers themselves will be smoother.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2>Don\u2019t be afraid to think about yourself<\/h2>\n<p>Yes, transparency is important.
