However, finding good public product roadmap examples can be hard.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Public roadmaps need to be formatted, designed, and hosted in a way that makes them easy to consume. They\u2019re useless without proper presentation.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This means that building a public roadmap can be a daunting task.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re a Canny user, you know that we offer <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/canny.io\/features\/roadmap\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">public product roadmap software<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, too.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, if you\u2019re <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">not<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> a Canny user (maybe you should be?), you\u2019re probably wondering about other options out there.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In this post, we\u2019re going to look at three companies who solved their roadmap needs without a specialized tool, and did it well!<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We\u2019ll also show you how to manage a product roadmap using Canny (featuring our own roadmap!).<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We\u2019ll look at why they\u2019re good, and what to learn from them.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>Specialized roadmapping tools<\/b><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These tools tend to be the best at communicating product goals. We&#8217;ll show you how they do it through examples.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>Public product roadmap example 1: Vendasta<\/b><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vendasta.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vendasta\u2019s<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> platform is made up of interconnected tools that help you sell more. They connect small businesses with product and service vendors.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe offer the technology, tools, training, support, frameworks, and partnership that enable marketing agencies and other digital experts to sell, go to market, and make money with Vendasta. You can make money by reselling our white-label products and services or selling in our marketplace.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<cite>Brendan King, CEO at Vendasta<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vendasta uses Canny for their public roadmap and changelog. They have quite a few categories on their feedback board. Once they prioritize that feedback, they divide it by status:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Up next<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In progress<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now available<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vendasta\u2019s using Canny very actively, keeping all users up to date on their progress. Their internal teams can clearly see which categories receive the most requests. For example, they can find out who requested it and, add their votes and comments. As soon as the status of a specific feature request changes, everyone who interacted with it gets notified automatically. This is by far the easiest way to close the feedback loop.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>Product Roadmap Example 2: Canny<\/b><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We don\u2019t like to toot our own horn too much, but we think our product roadmap is pretty good too!<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of the best aspects of our roadmap is that it\u2019s integrated with our product management system. It\u2019s part of a system that includes:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Feedback and <a href=\"https:\/\/canny.io\/blog\/what-is-idea-management\/\">idea management<\/a><\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prioritization<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Product roadmapping<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Changelog and release note updates<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We involve our key stakeholders throughout the entire process. We can also see how many votes each new feature has and some other values we pulled in.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The flip side of this is that our key stakeholders can also see all the ideas we\u2019re considering and add their input. This goes a step further than managing a public roadmap \u2014 external stakeholders can actually help decide what makes it to our roadmap with their input.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">From there, we score each idea using our weighted scoring prioritization formula. We then pick the highest-scoring ideas and move them into our public roadmap for all our users to see.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1086\" height=\"551\" src=\"https:\/\/canny.io\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/Canny-public-roadmap.avif\" alt=\"Canny's public roadmap. \" class=\"wp-image-8650\" style=\"width:600px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/canny.io\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/Canny-public-roadmap.avif 1086w, https:\/\/canny.io\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/Canny-public-roadmap-768x390.avif 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1086px) 100vw, 1086px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We have three statuses for our roadmap:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Under review<\/strong> \u2013 our product team is considering the idea\/feature request.<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Planned<\/strong> \u2013 we\u2019ve added this feature to our current product development cycle and the feature is coming. The product manager working on the feature posts an update that alerts each stakeholder interested in the idea. We ask for further input and feedback to finalize the project.<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>In progress<\/strong> \u2013 our development team is working on the feature.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of the main draws of this setup is that it encourages collaboration between our internal team and external stakeholders. We can learn more about how our users would use different product features. They can tell us why some features we\u2019re considering are important to them (or aren\u2019t). It helps our product roadmapping to be more user-driven, which helps us build the most impactful features.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The final step in our external roadmap process is publishing a <a href=\"http:\/\/go.canny.io\/changelog-template\">changelog entry<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"646\" height=\"667\" src=\"https:\/\/canny.io\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/Canny-changelog-entry-1.avif\" alt=\"A screenshot showing an example of a changelog entry in Canny. \" class=\"wp-image-8651\" style=\"width:600px\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With each product release, we create detailed <a href=\"https:\/\/canny.io\/blog\/release-notes\/\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"39\">release notes<\/a> using our changelog tool. This provides details on the new feature and how to use it. We can also share the entry with everyone who voted and commented on the original feature request.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We like to call that closing the feedback loop. It\u2019s the last stage in what we like to call a feedback-driven product roadmap.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>Adapted tools<\/b><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These tools weren&#8217;t built to host product roadmaps. However, they can still communicate product goals and the product development process. Some of them even offer <a href=\"https:\/\/go.canny.io\/roadmap-templates\">a product roadmap template<\/a>. It allows you to effortlessly generate captivating captions and images. It also empowers its users to share content across multiple social networks.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SocialBee uses <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/trello.com\/b\/jjJfymXv\/socialbee-product-roadmap\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trello<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for their roadmap. Endless columns, statuses, tags, and posts make a roadmap hard to navigate and slow to load.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Regardless of Trello\u2019s capabilities, SocialBee&#8217;s product managers made their roadmap system incredibly simple. 5 statuses total, and that\u2019s it.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anyone browsing it can easily find what they\u2019re looking for without having to scroll for hours.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>The roadmap \u201ckey\u201d<\/b><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SocialBee had added an explanation and a \u201ckey\u201d to the roadmap in the very first column.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The key explained the color tags used in the roadmap layout and made finding relevant information easier by filtering.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"900\" height=\"1600\" src=\"https:\/\/canny.io\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/SocialBee-roadmap-status.avif\" alt=\"SocialBee's key for their roadmap, showing different color codes for different types of projects. \" class=\"wp-image-8653\" style=\"width:600px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/canny.io\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/SocialBee-roadmap-status.avif 900w, https:\/\/canny.io\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/SocialBee-roadmap-status-768x1365.avif 768w, https:\/\/canny.io\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/SocialBee-roadmap-status-864x1536.avif 864w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even though the roadmap is pretty straightforward, there is also an explanation in the \u201chow does this board work?\u201d card.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This eliminates any potential confusion with which status really means what, or what stage something is in.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>Option to send feature requests<\/b><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Brownie points go to the \u201cYour feature request\u201d card in the first column.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many people get inspired to submit their own ideas when looking at public roadmaps. If the option to do so isn\u2019t in easy reach, it means extra effort for the user. The extra effort often means they\u2019ll give up.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trello isn\u2019t the best place to integrate feedback forms or pop-ups into. SocialBee has solved this by adding this card with their email. They also encourage users to leave comments on the card.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"502\" height=\"390\" src=\"https:\/\/canny.io\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/SocialBee-roadmap-2.avif\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-8654\" style=\"width:600px\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re planning on using Trello for your roadmapping, it\u2019s definitely a strategy to consider.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>Votes and comments<\/b><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The thing we love most about a good product roadmap example is the ability to have a discussion about features. Hey, it\u2019s pretty much what we built Canny for.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SocialBee isn\u2019t using Trello to just inform their users about new features. Or at least it\u2019s not your typical roadmap.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Up is a digital bank that helps you organize your money. They\u2019re very focused on design \u2013 it\u2019s evident from <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/up.com.au\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">their website<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.
