Well, I\u2019d change a lot of things! Knowing what I know now, I\u2019d be happy to go back and change my mistakes. I\u2019d spend time figuring out myself and how I&nbsp;work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>What makes me&nbsp;excited?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What makes me&nbsp;passionate?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Because now I know that I give my all to those projects. When I\u2019m excited and&nbsp;passionate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3. Ask the right questions<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/johnwslocum\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">John Slocum<\/a>, Senior Vice President of Product at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.3playmedia.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">3Play Media<\/a><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>We have to take a step back and think: what do we need to know to make the right decisions? We&#8217;re making all sorts of decisions all the time. Prioritize relentlessly<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/scott-williamson\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Scott Williamson<\/a>, Chief Product Officer at <a href=\"https:\/\/about.gitlab.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">GitLab<\/a><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>This advice is mostly for product team members who are making prioritization decisions. But I think it also applies to a product leader who is <a href=\"https:\/\/productchats.canny.io\/exploring-product-principles\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">building the&nbsp;system<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-video aligncenter\"><iframe width=\"650\" height=\"350\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/9GRr3a7ThSI\" title=\"YouTube video player\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen=\"\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" class=\"lazyload\" data-load-mode=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>I\u2019ll give you an example from when I joined GitLab. It&#8217;s a big company already, there&#8217;s a lot going on, and it&#8217;s complicated. There&#8217;s a thousand things I could have focused on, but I knew we had to triple the size of the team over the next two to three quarters. And so I said to anyone who would&nbsp;listen:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMy number one goal is&nbsp;hiring.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So I invested a lot of my time in making the process solid and interviewing candidates myself. That meant that I ignored things that you would normally expect a new CPO to dive&nbsp;into.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>I didn&#8217;t talk to customers as much as you would have&nbsp;expected.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>I didn&#8217;t dig in on the product as much as you would have&nbsp;expected.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>All because I knew hiring was my <strong>number one priority<\/strong>. And if we didn&#8217;t get the team staffed, then it doesn&#8217;t matter what I do&nbsp;personally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That&#8217;s an example of heavy prioritization. It&#8217;s knowing the thing that you&#8217;re trying to fix within your system. What&#8217;s the number one, or maybe two things? Feed that, make sure that happens, and then move on to the&nbsp;rest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It&#8217;s tempting to try to solve 10 or 20 things at once, but ultimately I don&#8217;t think it works as well. Instead, pick one thing and work on it until it clears the bar, and then move&nbsp;on.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>See which <a href=\"https:\/\/canny.io\/blog\/best-product-management-software\/\">product management software helps most with prioritization<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">5. Listen<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/mariahhay\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Mariah Hay<\/a>, Chief Experience Officer at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.helpscout.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Help Scout<\/a><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The skill around <a href=\"https:\/\/productchats.canny.io\/exploring-human-centered-design\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">effective listening<\/a> is so underestimated. It&#8217;s not just important to be a good researcher. As you move higher up in leadership ranks, you need to talk less and listen more. Yes, you need to have an opinion about how things should be done. But you should also constantly reevaluate that opinion by what you&#8217;re seeing around you and what people are&nbsp;saying.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-video aligncenter\"><iframe width=\"650\" height=\"350\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/3mymmBufrG8\" title=\"YouTube video player\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen=\"\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" class=\"lazyload\" data-load-mode=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Feedback is a gift<\/strong>. So listen to people. Pivot. Admit it when you make&nbsp;mistakes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">6. Work on your writing<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/anukirk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Anu Kirk<\/a>, Vice President of Product at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ossovr.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Osso VR<\/a><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Product management is still largely taught by <a href=\"https:\/\/productchats.canny.io\/the-lazy-product-manager-approach\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">apprenticeship<\/a>. There&#8217;s not really a lot of places where you can get a degree in product&nbsp;management.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-video aligncenter\"><iframe width=\"600\" height=\"350\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/EwX-eVBWn7U\" title=\"YouTube video player\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen=\"\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" class=\"lazyload\" data-load-mode=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>So, when people ask me, like: \u201cWhat can I do to be better?\u201d, I usually tell them a couple of&nbsp;things.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Work on your writing. Become a good documentation writer and a strong&nbsp;communicator.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\" start=\"2\">\n<li>Go design a&nbsp;feature.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>Even if you don&#8217;t have a product, take a product that you like or that you hate and figure out how to make it better or&nbsp;different.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And then just work through the standard product management process. <strong>Fake it <\/strong>a couple of&nbsp;times.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It&#8217;s no different than if you said you wanted to break into film scoring for example. How do you do that? Go and watch a movie with the sound off and compose your own score for it. Do that a bunch of times, and then you have a reel of your own&nbsp;content.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Same thing with product management. It&#8217;s very difficult to get started. But, if I was trying to hire someone who&#8217;d never done product management before, but they had something to show me, I\u2019d immediately think: \u201cThis person has got what it&nbsp;takes.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">7. Be empathetic<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/meganaberry\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Megan Berry<\/a>, VP of Product at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.octaneai.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Octane AI<\/a><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>As you&#8217;re dealing with your team, your customers, and other departments in the company, make sure you are&nbsp;empathetic.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-video aligncenter\"><iframe width=\"650\" height=\"350\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/KQrkVpXzfes\" title=\"YouTube video player\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen=\"\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" class=\"lazyload\" data-load-mode=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you understand where they&#8217;re coming from, you&#8217;re going to be more effective at <strong>motivating<\/strong>. And that is such an important part of being a product leader. You have to <a href=\"https:\/\/productchats.canny.io\/maintaining-work-life-balance-as-a-product-manager\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">motivate a lot of people<\/a> in various&nbsp;departments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">8. Be adaptable<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/kelseyruger\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Kelsey Ruger<\/a>, Vice President of Product at <a href=\"https:\/\/helloalice.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Hello Alice<\/a><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Imagine your <a href=\"https:\/\/canny.io\/blog\/roadmap-prioritization-guide\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">roadmap<\/a>. There are things on it that you&#8217;ve planned&nbsp;out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But in any business you\u2019ll have to shift from time to time. So you have to be&nbsp;adaptable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-video aligncenter\"><iframe width=\"650\" height=\"350\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/qhF678efXJs\" title=\"YouTube video player\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen=\"\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" class=\"lazyload\" data-load-mode=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So you&#8217;ve got to find people that <a href=\"https:\/\/productchats.canny.io\/building-tiny-products-and-finding-your-product-soulmate\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">understand the balance<\/a> between the planned and the actual projects. In other&nbsp;words:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Here&#8217;s what&#8217;s on the&nbsp;roadmap<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Here&#8217;s what we&#8217;re technically&nbsp;doing<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Here&#8217;s what the business is&nbsp;doing<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Here&#8217;s what we need to&nbsp;shift<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Here\u2019s what we need to take ownership&nbsp;of<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">9. Put yourself first<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/geoffreybyers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Geoffrey Byers<\/a>, Chief Product Officer at <a href=\"https:\/\/parkhub.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ParkHub<\/a><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Bring 100% every single day, but know when it&#8217;s time to focus on&nbsp;you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-video aligncenter\"><iframe width=\"650\" height=\"350\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/5qrndXR7jc4\" title=\"YouTube video player\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen=\"\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" class=\"lazyload\" data-load-mode=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can&#8217;t bring 100% if you aren&#8217;t also focused on you, when you need to be. I&#8217;ve struggled with this. Most of my colleagues have struggled with this. Sometimes you have to let go off that gas pedal. You need a balance, no matter how hungry you are. No matter how exciting something is, you have to take care of your wellness too. Only then can you <a href=\"https:\/\/productchats.canny.io\/experimental-frameworks-and-storytelling-in-product-management\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">bring 100% to&nbsp;work<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">10. Focus on the customer<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/falberini\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Francisco Alberini<\/a>, Product Manager at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.montecarlodata.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Monte Carlo<\/a><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Narrow everyone&#8217;s focus to <a href=\"https:\/\/productchats.canny.io\/succeeding-as-the-first-product-hire\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">what is important to the customer<\/a>. A lot of things will fall into place then. Bill Scott says: \u201cCustomers are the purifying stream that makes a team&nbsp;healthy.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-video aligncenter\"><iframe width=\"650\" height=\"350\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/hx5fiAR0Iys\" title=\"YouTube video player\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen=\"\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" class=\"lazyload\" data-load-mode=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">11. Never stop listening to your customers<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/sararossio\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Sara Rossio<\/a>, Chief Product Officer at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.g2.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">G2<\/a><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Never stop looking for trends that may impact your product. Once you listen, <a href=\"https:\/\/productchats.canny.io\/how-to-launch-new-products\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">take the risk<\/a>. Embrace the \u201cwhy\u201d<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/michaelmarriage\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Mike Marriage<\/a>, Senior Director of Product Management at <a href=\"https:\/\/bloomerang.co\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Bloomerang<\/a><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>And apply it liberally across all the different areas of the&nbsp;product.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Why do we need to do&nbsp;this?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Why do we need to do it&nbsp;now?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Why would our customers find this&nbsp;beneficial?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Why would I select this feature over&nbsp;others?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Why do you feel the customer needs&nbsp;this?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Why was my new feature not widely&nbsp;adopted?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-video aligncenter\"><iframe width=\"650\" height=\"350\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/M373aAgUt-Q\" title=\"YouTube video player\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen=\"\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" class=\"lazyload\" data-load-mode=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And that applies to both your own thought process and interactions that you&#8217;re going to have with colleagues and&nbsp;customers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I love the Five Why technique. If I remember correctly, it came out of Toyota in the 1950s and then was popularized more recently by the lean startup. And it really helps teams to collaborate and get to a root cause instead of simply treating the symptoms of a&nbsp;problem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Let\u2019s take one of the previous whys that I mentioned \u2013&nbsp;the new feature is not widely&nbsp;adopted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Why? Well, we didn&#8217;t deliver the functionality that customers really&nbsp;wanted.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Why? We didn&#8217;t meet with the customers to understand their&nbsp;needs.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Why? Maybe we cut corners in the design&nbsp;process.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Why? We were under pressure by the sales to get the&nbsp;feature.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Why?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>And it can continue like that. And it\u2019s not necessarily confined to five. In this example, you can see that we began to <a href=\"https:\/\/productchats.canny.io\/customer-centricity-in-product-management\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">take the problem apart<\/a>. And there were many problems that are going to require several solutions to fix all of that&nbsp;breakdown.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">13. Understand your customer<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/matt-peters-5984b5\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Matt Peters<\/a>, Chief Product Officer at <a href=\"https:\/\/expel.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Expel<\/a><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Talk to your <a href=\"https:\/\/productchats.canny.io\/people-enabled-by-products\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">customer<\/a>. Watch them use your product. Ask open-ended&nbsp;questions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-video aligncenter\"><iframe width=\"650\" height=\"350\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/L8KXX46R5rM\" title=\"YouTube video player\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen=\"\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" class=\"lazyload\" data-load-mode=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">14. Never stop learning<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/jcordeau\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Jonathan Cordeau<\/a>, VP of Product at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.peek.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Peek<\/a><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>I&#8217;m a huge fan of reading. We have the opportunity to continue our education path by just absorbing good information: podcasts, Medium articles etc. There&#8217;s a tremendous amount of ways to always better ourselves. There are lots of different ways of doing that too. So you don&#8217;t have to go get an MBA. You don&#8217;t have to go spend a bunch of money to get certifications. Not that those things are bad. But you have an opportunity to really self-serve your way, and to continue to level&nbsp;up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-video aligncenter\"><iframe width=\"650\" height=\"350\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/CGAjF9qxMcU\" title=\"YouTube video player\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen=\"\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" class=\"lazyload\" data-load-mode=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I also really love the trend of <a href=\"https:\/\/productchats.canny.io\/challenges-of-getting-alignment-in-product\/\">mentorship<\/a>. You can find a mentor to learn from within or outside of your&nbsp;organization.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So find someone that inspires you. Maybe you like their writing. Or the product they\u2019re working on. Perhaps they\u2019re doing something you\u2019re interested in, or maybe they work in a place where you\u2019d like ot be in a few&nbsp;years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The product management space has been really open for conversations like these. So take advantage of that to uplevel your&nbsp;career.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">15. Keep cool<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/gavin-wade-6326792\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Gavin Wade<\/a>, VP of Product at <a href=\"https:\/\/unmind.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Unmind<\/a><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>You are your product. The best thing I can do for my company is to treat my team like my product and <a href=\"https:\/\/productchats.canny.io\/neurodiversity-and-mental-health-at-work\/\">enable them<\/a> to be the best that they can be. I put all of my energy into them, and I know that they will build an amazing product for our users because of&nbsp;that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-video aligncenter\"><iframe width=\"650\" height=\"350\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/n4pwRXNZp50\" title=\"YouTube video player\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen=\"\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" class=\"lazyload\" data-load-mode=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">16. Be patient<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/sasha-freese\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Sasha Freese<\/a>, VP of Product at <a href=\"https:\/\/indicodata.ai\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Indico Data<\/a><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Starting out, I was also so hungry for more. I didn&#8217;t even know that product management was a thing! But when I got here, I was realized that this is it for me. So I kept asking&nbsp;myself:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>How do I get&nbsp;more?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>How can I be heard&nbsp;better?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>How can I&nbsp;advocate?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-video aligncenter\"><iframe width=\"650\" height=\"350\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/8_-2w1Dr2HI\" title=\"YouTube video player\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen=\"\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" class=\"lazyload\" data-load-mode=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The biggest thing that I had to learn is being patient and <strong>meeting people where they are<\/strong> \u2013 at their stage. Even if you want to influence and advocate for the future, you need to come back to the same level as your&nbsp;customers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you&#8217;re 10 steps ahead of somebody, but people care about the current problems that they\u2019re facing, there\u2019s a <strong>big&nbsp;disconnect<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>All of these things require your <strong>patience and understanding<\/strong>. And I think it goes a long way when <a href=\"https:\/\/productchats.canny.io\/listening-to-your-customers-to-build-better-products\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">building relationships with&nbsp;people<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">17. Keep going<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/erikdawson\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Erik Dawson<\/a>, Senior Director of Product Management at <a href=\"https:\/\/leaflink.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">LeafLink<\/a><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Product is a really challenging function. It&#8217;s really fun, really rewarding, and there&#8217;s so much to do. One of the big challenges is potentially getting bogged down in the opportunity&nbsp;of:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>What to do&nbsp;next?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Am I doing the right&nbsp;thing?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-video aligncenter\"><iframe width=\"650\" height=\"350\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/1BQwBkh12oM\" title=\"YouTube video player\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen=\"\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" class=\"lazyload\" data-load-mode=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>My advice<\/strong>: if you have a really strong objective, a strategy, and you are consistently seeking deep understanding of the customer and of the business, then keep going. Don&#8217;t stagnate. In your product backlog, on your roadmap, plant a flag and go. Deliver great work, learn from it and just keep&nbsp;going.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you keep going, then you&#8217;re going to make improvements. You&#8217;re also gonna grow as a product leader every day over&nbsp;time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Product management is a marathon. It is not a sprint. Even though we love to talk about agility, velocity, iterating, doing and getting quick wins. Over time, you achieve <a href=\"https:\/\/productchats.canny.io\/exploring-product-momentum\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">product success<\/a> by staying the course, learning, making strategic and important pivots at times, but continuously pressing&nbsp;forward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Getting and staying motivated<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>We hope you found this list&nbsp;valuable!&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the most important pieces of advice we hear from these product experts is to always be learning.
