We spent 9 days together working, exploring, singing, and brainstorming. Here\u2019s what went down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Canny in Japan\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/r1wDGQ_0n8c?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why retreats?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Our semi-annual retreats have been at the core of Canny since the very beginning. Because we\u2019re all remote, we really need this quality time together. Over the years, we\u2019ve noticed how much closer we all become after spending a week together in an unfamiliar place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/canny.io\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/CannyMexico-37.avif\" alt=\"Canny in Mexico City\" class=\"wp-image-4454\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This retreat has been the most logistically challenging one yet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Preparations<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We always start planning our next retreat soon after the previous one is over. So, we started planning for a May retreat in Tokyo in November. We had to consider:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Visa requirements<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>COVID restrictions<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Flights and layovers (we have team members in the US, Canada, Spain, Turkey, and the UK)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Accommodations for 14 people<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Activities and meals<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Costs for all of the above<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So yeah, it was a task and a half. But boy was it worth it! Here\u2019s how we approached it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How we made it happen<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We started by assessing all the costs \u2013&nbsp;of getting there and being there for 9 days. We tracked flights from each location (and scored some sweet deals!) and compared prices for hotels and Airbnbs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Acommodations<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We split the team by departments and booked 2 different Airbnbs (with 5 units in total). Luckily, they were only 5 minutes away from each other. This was very important to scheduling team meetings and hangouts together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2000\" height=\"1500\" src=\"https:\/\/canny.io\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/IMG_2076.avif\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4441\" srcset=\"https:\/\/canny.io\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/IMG_2076.avif 2000w, https:\/\/canny.io\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/IMG_2076-768x576.avif 768w, https:\/\/canny.io\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/IMG_2076-1536x1152.avif 1536w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 2000px) 100vw, 2000px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Meals and activities<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For meals and activities, we tried to plan in advance. Getting a table for 14 people in a Tokyo restaurant is probably a lot to ask for, so we had to be resourceful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As soon as we locked down Tokyo as a destination, we created a Canny board for ideas and voting. Yes, we used our own software for retreat planning. \ud83d\ude0e<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh3.googleusercontent.com\/sA9vx_2lA65z5fJE5dU4dFYMPbg8AXqLIjq2hg_57ZB24AN5rBMwuHxWqqv9iWjXbiECKa_vuNBLR3OazkJy4LSUrkiaXA3EEk_ScgxD8tVUsKkC_64MNYNfHhUT5QKjtOy2bGhNP3queEbTbsa0SoQ\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Anyone could submit ideas and vote on them. That\u2019s how we came up with a shortlist of things to do and see.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We also found and saved some highly-rated restaurants (using Google and Tabelog) in advance. Once we were there, we split into smaller groups to find tables easier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We booked some activities months in advance \u2013 teamLab Planets Tokyo, the Ghibli Museum, and Urayasu Ooedo Onsen. It\u2019s very important not to leave anyone out, but also not to force people to do anything they\u2019re uncomfortable with.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We\u2019re lucky though \u2013&nbsp;our team is usually on the same page, and we all vibe very well together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2000\" height=\"1500\" src=\"https:\/\/canny.io\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/IMG_2254_Original.avif\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4443\" srcset=\"https:\/\/canny.io\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/IMG_2254_Original.avif 2000w, https:\/\/canny.io\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/IMG_2254_Original-768x576.avif 768w, https:\/\/canny.io\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/IMG_2254_Original-1536x1152.avif 1536w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 2000px) 100vw, 2000px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Finally, we had a Notion document with some FAQs and important information about Japan. We&nbsp; wanted to ensure that our team understood the culture and that we were prepared and respectful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Exploring Tokyo<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After all the planning, we finally arrived in Japan. A few of us landed earlier to explore beforehand. And, some of us stayed later to keep exploring.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The team met on May 11 and found our way to Komagome \u2013&nbsp;that\u2019s where we were based for the next 9 days.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We chose this area because it\u2019s:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Quiet<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Has a subway station<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Has lots of food options<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Close to key attractions<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As we waited for everyone to arrive, we got some Japanese snacks from 7-Eleven and just hung out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2000\" height=\"1500\" src=\"https:\/\/canny.io\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/2AE35465-B9A5-4E98-872A-FA95FBB69C03_1_102_o.avif\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4444\" srcset=\"https:\/\/canny.io\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/2AE35465-B9A5-4E98-872A-FA95FBB69C03_1_102_o.avif 2000w, https:\/\/canny.io\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/2AE35465-B9A5-4E98-872A-FA95FBB69C03_1_102_o-768x576.avif 768w, https:\/\/canny.io\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/2AE35465-B9A5-4E98-872A-FA95FBB69C03_1_102_o-1536x1152.avif 1536w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 2000px) 100vw, 2000px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During these 9 days, we saw a lot. In particular:<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Inokashira park<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ghibli museum<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Shibuya<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Akihabara<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Karaoke 2x<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Urayasu Ooedo Onsen<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>teamLab Planets Tokyo<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Arcades<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Kamakura<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Cat cafe<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Shinjuku<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We got some rainy days, so we swapped weekends and weekdays to make the most out of this trip.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We tried all the Japanese food we could find and made many memories together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1520\" height=\"800\" src=\"https:\/\/canny.io\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/4.avif\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4451\" srcset=\"https:\/\/canny.io\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/4.avif 1520w, https:\/\/canny.io\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/4-768x404.avif 768w, https:\/\/canny.io\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/4-760x400.avif 760w, https:\/\/canny.io\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/4-209x110.avif 209w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1520px) 100vw, 1520px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s bound to happen: with such a large group, people can get lost and separated. During our team outings, that happened a few times. Don\u2019t worry \u2013&nbsp;we all found each other in the end!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We came up with an idea for next time \u2013&nbsp;ask people to pair up. This way, if someone\u2019s lost, at least they\u2019re not alone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You can swap buddies each day too \u2013&nbsp;just to mix it up. We\u2019ll try it next time and will report back!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Working<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As always, these team retreats are centered around team collaboration. We had several very productive meetings and brainstorming sessions. Anyone could create and lead a meeting too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We talked about:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The future of Canny<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Product specifics and direction<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Pricing<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Operations<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Marketing<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>And more<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Important<\/strong>: we made sure that each meeting had an owner. It\u2019s easy to get lost in brainstorming and not assign any action items. So we did our best to prevent it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We also created lots of content, taking advantage of being in such an awesome and unfamiliar place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Lessons<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This trip was a truly amazing and one-of-a-kind experience. Everyone took away something unique and special for them. Here are some of the learnings from this trip:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Plan in advance, as much as possible<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Don\u2019t assume anything \u2013&nbsp;research all prices, accommodations, and unique quirks about your destination<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Involve team members and plan together<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Be flexible and ready for plans to change<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Be ready to split into smaller groups<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Have an open mind and encourage every team member to do the same<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Rest, try to avoid FOMO, and enjoy<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One thing\u2019s for sure: we\u2019re all still in awe of Japan and our team. We\u2019re now extra-motivated to work hard and bring our ideas to life.
