Because we\u2019re all remote, we really need this quality time together. Over the years, we\u2019ve noticed how much closer we all become after spending a week together in an unfamiliar&nbsp;place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-src=\"https:\/\/canny.io\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/CannyMexico-37.jpg\" alt=\"Canny in Mexico City\" class=\"wp-image-4454 lazyload\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 800px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 800\/600;\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>This retreat has been the most logistically challenging one&nbsp;yet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Preparations<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>We always start planning our next retreat soon after the previous one is over. So, we started planning for a May retreat in Tokyo in November. We had to&nbsp;consider:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Visa&nbsp;requirements<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>COVID&nbsp;restrictions<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Flights and layovers (we have team members in the US, Canada, Spain, Turkey, and the&nbsp;UK)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Accommodations for 14&nbsp;people<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Activities and&nbsp;meals<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Costs for all of the&nbsp;above<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>So yeah, it was a task and a half. But boy was it worth it! Here\u2019s how we approached&nbsp;it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How we made it happen<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>We started by assessing all the costs \u2013&nbsp;of getting there and being there for 9 days. We tracked flights from each location (and scored some sweet deals!) and compared prices for hotels and&nbsp;Airbnbs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Acommodations<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>We split the team by departments and booked 2 different Airbnbs (with 5 units in total). Luckily, they were only 5 minutes away from each other. Getting a table for 14 people in a Tokyo restaurant is probably a lot to ask for, so we had to be&nbsp;resourceful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As soon as we locked down Tokyo as a destination, we created a Canny board for ideas and voting. Yes, we used our own software for retreat planning.&nbsp;\ud83d\ude0e<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-src=\"https:\/\/lh3.googleusercontent.com\/sA9vx_2lA65z5fJE5dU4dFYMPbg8AXqLIjq2hg_57ZB24AN5rBMwuHxWqqv9iWjXbiECKa_vuNBLR3OazkJy4LSUrkiaXA3EEk_ScgxD8tVUsKkC_64MNYNfHhUT5QKjtOy2bGhNP3queEbTbsa0SoQ\" alt=\"\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" class=\"lazyload\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Anyone could submit ideas and vote on them. That\u2019s how we came up with a shortlist of things to do and&nbsp;see.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We also found and saved some highly-rated restaurants (using Google and Tabelog) in advance. Once we were there, we split into smaller groups to find tables&nbsp;easier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We booked some activities months in advance \u2013 teamLab Planets Tokyo, the Ghibli Museum, and Urayasu Ooedo Onsen. It\u2019s very important not to leave anyone out, but also not to force people to do anything they\u2019re uncomfortable&nbsp;with.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We\u2019re lucky though \u2013&nbsp;our team is usually on the same page, and we all vibe very well&nbsp;together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"2000\" height=\"1500\" data-src=\"https:\/\/canny.io\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/IMG_2254_Original.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4443 lazyload\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/canny.io\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/IMG_2254_Original.jpg 2000w, https:\/\/canny.io\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/IMG_2254_Original-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/canny.io\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/IMG_2254_Original-1536x1152.jpg 1536w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 2000px) 100vw, 2000px\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 2000px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 2000\/1500;\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Finally, we had a Notion document with some FAQs and important information about Japan. We&nbsp; wanted to ensure that our team understood the culture and that we were prepared and&nbsp;respectful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Exploring Tokyo<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>After all the planning, we finally arrived in Japan. A few of us landed earlier to explore beforehand. And, some of us stayed later to keep&nbsp;exploring.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The team met on May 11 and found our way to Komagome \u2013&nbsp;that\u2019s where we were based for the next 9&nbsp;days.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We chose this area because&nbsp;it\u2019s:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Quiet<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Has a subway&nbsp;station<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Has lots of food&nbsp;options<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Close to key&nbsp;attractions<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>As we waited for everyone to arrive, we got some Japanese snacks from 7-Eleven and just hung&nbsp;out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"2000\" height=\"1500\" data-src=\"https:\/\/canny.io\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/2AE35465-B9A5-4E98-872A-FA95FBB69C03_1_102_o.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4444 lazyload\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/canny.io\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/2AE35465-B9A5-4E98-872A-FA95FBB69C03_1_102_o.jpeg 2000w, https:\/\/canny.io\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/2AE35465-B9A5-4E98-872A-FA95FBB69C03_1_102_o-768x576.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/canny.io\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/2AE35465-B9A5-4E98-872A-FA95FBB69C03_1_102_o-1536x1152.jpeg 1536w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 2000px) 100vw, 2000px\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 2000px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 2000\/1500;\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>During these 9 days, we saw a lot. In&nbsp;particular:<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Inokashira&nbsp;park<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ghibli&nbsp;museum<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Shibuya<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Akihabara<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Karaoke&nbsp;2x<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Urayasu Ooedo&nbsp;Onsen<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>teamLab Planets&nbsp;Tokyo<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Arcades<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Kamakura<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Cat&nbsp;cafe<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Shinjuku<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>We got some rainy days, so we swapped weekends and weekdays to make the most out of this&nbsp;trip.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We tried all the Japanese food we could find and made many memories&nbsp;together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1520\" height=\"800\" data-src=\"https:\/\/canny.io\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/4.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4451 lazyload\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/canny.io\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/4.jpg 1520w, https:\/\/canny.io\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/4-768x404.jpg 768w, https:\/\/canny.io\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/4-760x400.jpg 760w, https:\/\/canny.io\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/4-209x110.jpg 209w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 1520px) 100vw, 1520px\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 1520px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 1520\/800;\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s bound to happen: with such a large group, people can get lost and separated. During our team outings, that happened a few times. Don\u2019t worry \u2013&nbsp;we all found each other in the&nbsp;end!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We came up with an idea for next time \u2013&nbsp;ask people to pair up. This way, if someone\u2019s lost, at least they\u2019re not&nbsp;alone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can swap buddies each day too \u2013&nbsp;just to mix it up. We\u2019ll try it next time and will report&nbsp;back!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Working<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>As always, these team retreats are centered around team collaboration. We had several very productive meetings and brainstorming sessions. Anyone could create and lead a meeting&nbsp;too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We talked&nbsp;about:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The future of&nbsp;Canny<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Product specifics and&nbsp;direction<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Pricing<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Operations<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Marketing<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>And&nbsp;more<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Important<\/strong>: we made sure that each meeting had an owner. It\u2019s easy to get lost in brainstorming and not assign any action items. So we did our best to prevent&nbsp;it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We also created lots of content, taking advantage of being in such an awesome and unfamiliar&nbsp;place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Lessons<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>This trip was a truly amazing and one-of-a-kind experience. Everyone took away something unique and special for them. Here are some of the learnings from this&nbsp;trip:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Plan in advance, as much as&nbsp;possible<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Don\u2019t assume anything \u2013&nbsp;research all prices, accommodations, and unique quirks about your&nbsp;destination<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Involve team members and plan&nbsp;together<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Be flexible and ready for plans to&nbsp;change<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Be ready to split into smaller&nbsp;groups<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Have an open mind and encourage every team member to do the&nbsp;same<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Rest, try to avoid FOMO, and&nbsp;enjoy<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>One thing\u2019s for sure: we\u2019re all still in awe of Japan and our team. We\u2019re now extra-motivated to work hard and bring our ideas to life.
